A guy at my local reptile shop once told me about a customer who bought a hatchling terrapin red eared slider for her son, set it up in a 10-gallon tank with a plastic palm tree, and figured that was that. Fourteen months later she was back, asking why her “small turtle” now had a…
A guy in my local fish group posted a photo last spring of his betta tank: a 5 gallon cube so packed with driftwood, fake castles, and a giant filter box that the poor fish had about six inches of open water to swim in. He asked why his betta looked stressed and stopped building…
A guy at my local reptile expo once showed me his brand-new 40-gallon breeder tank, all set up for a juvenile frilled dragon he’d just bought. It looked great on paper: wide floor, nice branches, warm basking spot. The problem? That tank was 18 inches wide but only 16 inches tall, and his dragon spent…
A guy at my local fish store told me a story I can’t shake: he bought a betta for his desk, dropped it in a half-gallon vase with some marbles and a plastic plant, and it died in nine days. He came back convinced bettas were just “fragile fish.” They’re not. He’d built a small,…
A customer walked into a local fish shop asking for “the same 20 gallons as my buddy’s tank,” pointed at a 20 gallon long, and got confused when it looked nothing like his friend’s tall, narrow setup. Same water volume, totally different shape. That mix-up happens more than you’d think, and it’s exactly why picking…
A reptile shop owner once told me a customer came in asking for “an easy first gecko” and walked out with a tokay gecko because the color pattern caught her eye. Three weeks later she was back, hand wrapped in gauze, asking how to rehome it. That’s the tokay gecko in a nutshell: gorgeous, loud,…
A guy at a reptile expo in Ohio once told me he lost his first ball python because he kept the humidity at 30% for six months, thinking “dry is safer than wet.” The snake stopped eating, then had a shed so bad it lost a toe cap trying to strip old skin off on…
A reptile shop regular once brought back a leopard gecko and a bearded dragon he’d been keeping in the same 40-gallon tank for three months. He couldn’t figure out why his gecko had stopped eating and looked thin. The bearded dragon was fine, active, basking like a champ. The gecko was stressed out of its…
A guy in my local reptile club bought a 20 gallon long tank for what he swore would be a simple community fish tank. Three weeks later, he’d swapped in cypress mulch, a heat lamp, and a pair of fire-bellied toads, because he realized the footprint was perfect for a paludarium and the fish idea…
You’re standing in a pet store aisle, staring at a wall of generic supplies, knowing there’s a better aquarium store near me somewhere in your city. You just need to find the right one. That frustration is real, and it’s fixable. If you’re stocking a reef tank, sourcing live plants for a paludarium, or hunting…
